‘Don’t rush’: After leaping to the majors, Royals’ Kris Bubic now must settle in

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jela Bubic speaks to her son, Kris, daily, so she knew his plan for Wednesday. He would be hopping in the car at the hotel and heading to T-Bones Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Once there, the 22-year-old would ready his left arm for five or so innings of game action. Weather, Kris had told her, was the only thing stopping his continued innings buildup. But that, of course, everything was totally out of her control.

So on Wednesday morning, Jela woke up on Pacific Time inside her home in Cupertino, Calif., and went about her day as she typically does. She stepped outside and went for a walk. She returned home and watered the plants. Her mind wandered all throughout until she checked her phone and saw a missed call and a text message from Kris, urging her to call him.

“The first thing that comes to a mother’s mind is, ‘Oh, my gosh, I wonder what happened,’” Jela said.
