Mountcastle, Wisdom were top June rookies

Orioles first baseman/outfielder/designated hitter Ryan Mountcastle and Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom are June’s Rookie of the Month Award winners.

It had been more than a decade since an Orioles player was named American League Rookie of the Month. Mountcastle is the team’s first winner since Brian Matusz in 2010. The 24-year-old slugger hit .327 with nine home runs, 26 RBIs and a 1.015 OPS over 26 games in June.

Wisdom, 29, didn’t make his season debut until May 25 this year, but he’s become an integral part of Chicago’s lineup. Over 27 games in June, Wisdom posted a .260 average with eight homers, 16 RBIs and a .950 OPS.

Wisdom had brief stints in the Majors in each of the previous three seasons, but he still has rookie eligibility. He’s the first Cub to win the National League Rookie of the Month Award since Kris Bryant did it twice in 2015.
